Apple’s iPhone sales in China jump 52% in April, data shows

APPLE

Apple’s (NASDAQ) smartphone shipments in China surged by 52% in April compared to the same month last year, continuing a rebound from the previous month, according to data from a research firm linked to the Chinese government.

Data from the China Academy of Information and Communications Technology (CAICT) revealed that shipments of foreign-branded phones in China rose by 52% in April, reaching 3.495 million units, up from 2.301 million units a year earlier.

Although the report did not specifically name Apple, the company is the leading foreign smartphone maker in China’s market. This indicates that the significant increase in foreign-branded shipments is likely due to Apple’s performance.

This notable growth follows a weak start to the year in the world’s largest smartphone market, where Apple faces growing competition in the high-end segment from local brands like Huawei.

In March, Apple’s shipments in China increased by 12%, a considerable recovery from the first two months of 2024, during which the company saw a 37% decline in sales.

Sales may get an additional boost in May as Apple launched a significant discount campaign on its official Tmall site in China, offering discounts of up to 2,300 yuan ($318) on select iPhone models. This price cut is twice the size of the discount offered in February.

This move comes after Huawei launched its new high-end smartphone series, the Pura 70, in April, following the Mate 60 release last August. Huawei overtook Apple in the first quarter to become the second-largest smartphone vendor in China and is intensifying its marketing efforts by opening more flagship stores and expanding its retail network. Huawei’s spinoff, Honor, currently holds the top position.

Overall, smartphone sales in China increased by 25.5% to 22.7 million units in April, according to CAICT data.
