According to Bloomberg, Meta Platforms Inc. (NASDAQ
) CEO Mark Zuckerberg recently lauded former President Donald Trump, describing his reaction after being shot as “badass” and “inspiring.”
In an interview at Meta’s headquarters, Zuckerberg expressed admiration for Trump’s resilience, stating, “Seeing Donald Trump get up after getting shot in the face and pump his fist in the air with the American flag is one of the most badass things I’ve ever seen in my life.” He suggested that this display of spirit contributes to Trump’s strong appeal among voters.
Despite these remarks, Zuckerberg did not endorse Trump or his rival, President Joe Biden, and indicated that he does not plan to engage in the upcoming election.
Bloomberg observed that Zuckerberg’s comments are part of a broader trend in Silicon Valley, where figures such as Elon Musk and venture capitalists Marc Andreessen and Ben Horowitz have also shown increased support for Trump, with some contributing to his campaign.
Additionally, Zuckerberg discussed Meta’s efforts to reduce political content on its platforms. He emphasized a desire for Facebook to be less of a flashpoint during elections, saying, “The main thing that I hear from people is that they actually want to see less political content on our services.” He added that Meta is working on recommending less political content to users.
Zuckerberg’s relationship with Trump has been strained, especially after Trump was suspended from Facebook and Instagram following the January 6 Capitol riots. Although Trump’s accounts have since been reinstated, he has criticized Meta and warned Zuckerberg on Truth Social to “be careful,” labeling the company as the “enemy of the people.”
Lastly, Zuckerberg addressed competition from TikTok, noting, “I think we’re doing pretty well here. We’re gaining market share,” but refrained from commenting on whether the app should be banned, stating, “That’s above my pay grade,” according to Bloomberg.
