Chinese technology firm ByteDance is collaborating with U.S. chipmaker Broadcom Inc (NASDAQ
) to develop a sophisticated artificial intelligence processor, as reported by Reuters on Monday.
This initiative aims to ensure a reliable supply of AI chips for ByteDance, particularly in light of stringent U.S. export restrictions on chips to China. The planned 5-nanometer chip will comply with U.S. export regulations and will likely be manufactured by TSMC (NYSE
), the world’s largest contract chipmaker.
ByteDance and Broadcom already maintain an existing partnership, with ByteDance having procured several AI-related chips from Broadcom over the past two years.
Strengthening their partnership signifies increased efforts by Chinese tech firms to secure advanced AI chips, following U.S. measures that prevent major chipmakers, particularly NVIDIA Corporation (NASDAQ
), from selling their most advanced AI technology to China.
While Nvidia can still sell less advanced AI chips in China, these products have received a tepid response compared to those from local competitors like Huawei.
This development is part of a larger trend towards generative AI, spurred by applications such as OpenAI’s ChatGPT. ByteDance is reportedly working on its own generative AI platform as well.
AI has become a significant driver of demand for global chipmakers. Earlier this year, Broadcom raised its annual earnings forecast, anticipating increased demand fueled by AI advancements.
