The Japanese government has mandated Toyota Motor (NYSE) to implement “drastic reforms” after uncovering new violations in the automaker’s vehicle certification procedures.
In a corrective order, the transport ministry revealed that on-site inspections had discovered widespread, intentional misconduct and irregularities in seven additional models not previously disclosed.
Toyota acknowledged the corrective order, stating it must “make drastic reforms to ensure appropriate certification operations.”
The automaker is currently verifying compliance for the involved models and assured customers that they do not need to stop using the affected vehicles.
Earlier this month, Toyota reported no new cases of wrongdoing in car model certification applications beyond those already disclosed in June.
In June, Toyota and four other vehicle makers admitted to submitting flawed or manipulated data when applying for vehicle certification.
#Toyota’s violations involved three current production models—the Corolla Fielder, #Corolla Axio, and Yaris Cross—and discontinued versions of four other models, including one sold under the luxury #Lexus brand.
#Toyota plans to resume production for these models at the beginning of September, pending the transport ministry’s confirmation of compliance.
This investigation was prompted by the transport ministry’s order for industry-wide certification practice checks following a safety test scandal at Toyota’s Daihatsu compact car unit.
The ministry noted that six of the seven additional Toyota models with irregularities were also certified in other countries and has informed overseas authorities about these issues.
Four of the additional models—a minivan sold under the names Noah and Voxy, and the RAV4, Harrier, and Lexus LM—are still in production, while three are no longer manufactured..
